Leaving On A Trip Of A Lifetime

We are t-minus 60 days until I leave for the greatest adventure of my life. In 62 days, I will be leaving the U.S. for the very first time and embarking on a journey to Guayaquil, Ecuador.

I feel completely unprepared and unequipped, but at the same time, I feel completely ready to go. How is that possible?

I have my passport.

I felt like a real live grown up when it came in the mail. I even called my mom out of pure excitement. My husband looked at me like I was insane.

I know most people wouldn’t think a passport is a big deal, but I grew up in Moweaqua, Illinois, people. It’s a small town and I still hold on to that small town mentality.

I got all of my immunizations.

That hurt. I had to get a tetanus shot and vaccines for Hep A, Hep B and Typhoid. Thankfully, the Typhoid vaccine is just a pill. The others, however, are shots (duh).

Now, when the nurse says, “The tetanus is going to hurt pretty bad, so do you want it in a different arm than the other two?” The natural reaction would be, “Yes, please.”

My reaction? If my arm is going to hurt anyway, why not get it over with and put them all in the same one? At least then I will have one fully functional arm.

Brilliant.

So, for the last three days, I have not been able to lift my left arm above a 15° angle. To add insult to injury, I was sick as a dog all weekend (fever, body aches, nausea, and general unpleasantness) because I apparently got every side effect the immunizations offered.

I am being a general pain in the rear to the trip organizers.

I have emailed them with every little question I can think of and probably some that I haven’t even thought of yet. I hate feeling unprepared and even though we have 62 days until we’re on our way, I want itineraries, a list of who’s going with me and so on and so forth.

I’m a psycho. I know.

I am reading the letters from my sponsored child over and over again.

I’ve been lucky in this regard. I have received three letters from my sponsored child this year. The requirement is that the child only has to send two letters to the sponsor, so to know that the center in Manta, Ecuador is taking such care with their children that I should get three letters in just seven months warms my heart.

I can’t wait to meet these wonderful people who are helping Jaleska to grow in Christ and in herself into the young lady she is meant to be. I can’t wait to see her sweet little face. Mostly, though (and this might be weird), I can’t wait to meet her mother.

Oh, please let me meet her mother!

From the letters I have received from Jaleska and her tutor, her mother Liliana sounds like a wonderful woman. As a matter of fact, I hope I get to meet her entire family. I want to hug each and every one of them. I want to get to know them so that I can not only send small little gifts to Jaleska, but also to her siblings and parents.

To be honest, I’m scared to death. But in the most excited and wonderful sort of way. I’m scared to be doing something so huge on my own (there will be others in the group, but since I don’t know who they are, I am on my own for now), but I’m so excited to be doing it at all.

I’m sure this won’t be the last of it you hear from me. I can’t wait!

Getting My Weight Loss Back Into High Gear

I know I haven’t been updating much on my weight loss journey, but I have not given up. I definitely fell off the wagon for a few weeks, but I’ve picked myself up with a renewed enthusiasm and a brand spaking new plan of attack.

    • Motivation – First off, I grew somewhat bored with my weight loss attempt and just didn’t care. I was accountable (truly) to no one. However, my department at work started a fat loss challenge and we are all highly competitive. We weight in every week and then measure our BMI and Body Fat with our new Fat Loss Monitor. We all put $10 into a piggy bank and there are consequences for failure. For every tenth of a percent of body fat gained, we are fined 25¢. There is some major sabotage going on (which is completely allowed), but mostly we are all having fun and really putting our effort into it. At the end, whoever loses the highest % of body fat wins the pot ($50). The entire department (all 4 of us) is involved, so it’s definitely fun and they are holding me accountable for every choice.
    •  Pilates Stretch ExerciseExercise – I have always slacked off in the exercise department. Lucky for me, I recently received the full set of Fusion Pilates DVDs for review and I am now starting to implement them into my routine. There are four DVDs included: Triple Threat (to prepare your body for pregnancy and maintain your body afterward), Fusion Pilates for Pregnancy, Post-Pregnancy and C-Section Recovery and Exercising with Baby. Since I am not pregnant and haven’t been for over three years, I’m using the Triple Threat to whip me into shape. Last night, I went through the entire DVD without even realizing it was over an hour long. I worked up a crazy sweat and felt amazing afterward. I haven’t had a good workout like that in a long time, so it was awesome to really push my body to its limits. I’ll keep using this DVD as a part of my exercise plan and update you in a few weeks. I’m also walking at least a mile every day during the week, so that adds a good 20 minute workout to my routine.
  • Diet – I am currently on a calorie-reduced diet. I’m trying to eat no more than 1,500 calories a day and make those calories really count. I am cutting out snacking entirely and no more bedtime bowls of cereal. I’ve got to get my thinking back in line and build a healthy relationship with food or I am never going to be successful in losing this weight and keeping it off. The cycle has to change, so over the next 60 days or so, I’m going radical on it. I’m eating more proteins and veggies than I normally do and much less processed food. No more “fillers” in my diet. If I’m going to eat it, it’s going to matter and do something good for my body. I’m also making sure to drink at least 64 ounces of water each day, but it’s turning out to be a lot more than that because I’m finding myself constantly thirsty.
  • Supplementation – I needed a kick-start to my weight loss to keep me motivated and show me that it’s not impossible. On a whim, I was walking around BJ’s the other day thinking about getting something like a protein shake or supplements and I came across Pro Clinical Hydroxycut. So, I’m going to try it out and see how it goes. My first day on it was Monday and I felt great all day and I’m feeling great today, too, so I think it’s going to be good. It’s got an awful lot of caffeine in it so it leaves me feeling a wee bit jittery, but no more than a bottle of Pepsi might make me feel. I take them about 30 minutes before each meal, continue on my calorie-reduced diet and drinks lots of water. The exercise is a boost, too.

So far, I’ve seen a little bit of a result. Through our weight loss challenge at work, we’re tracking our % of body fat and BMI. My body fat percentage has dropped from 34.5% down to 33.7% in the past 7 days (before Hydroxycut or any exercise) and my BMI has gone from 28.9 to 28.8. I know it’s a minimal change, but I’ll take anything at this point. Now that I’ve added in exercise and Hydroxycut, I think I’ll start seeing some pretty awesome results.

You know, I kept telling myself that I was failing because I was eating more often. But, what I’m realizing is that it’s not how much I’m eating – it’s what I’m eating that’s making a difference. I still have my moments of weakness where I’ll break down and have an extra snack, but I haven’t been pigging out on every single sweet that crosses my path.

My mind has changed and it’s a strange sensation. The other day I was at Publix – surrounded by a ton of junk food and sugar – and I needed a snack. Much to my surprise, I found myself in the produce section looking for a quick snack. I ended up with a little prepared snack pack of apple slices and grapes. Instead of going down the candy aisle and picking up circus peanuts and gummy worms, I bought fruit.

Healthy Natural Foods for Dieting

My tastes are changing and I’m now seeking out healthy food.

Now, I want to be clear. I have not become a health nut all of a sudden. I have still had my fair share of Diet Cokes in the past few weeks and I still struggle to pass up soda in social settings. It seems soda is my one vice that is going to be the hardest habit to kick.

I’m currently one week into Month 3 of this Shaklee Cinch Inch Loss journey and I’m down 1.4 pounds so far. Just being in the 140s has been such a sweet victory for me. I thought I would never get out of the 150s and I thought I would never get out of a size 14. However, I will need to go shopping next week because my pants are literally falling off of me at every turn. I’m very nervous to see what size I end up needing when I go next week. I’ll be sure to keep you posted.

Since my last update I haven’t posted much about the journey to lose this weight.  I’ve been struggling with ups and downs as various “family gatherings” or other things pull me different directions.  It hasn’t been remotely easy, but so far the progress I’ve made has made me really happy.  Being below 150 was my original goal, so it’s great.  I’m down to a size 12 and aiming for a final result of a size 8 or below.  This is going to be a huge challenge.

I’m starting to feel more energetic and the foods I eat are now a lot healthier than they were originally.  I’ve gotten rid of a lot of the processed foods that I was eating before, and I think this has made the biggest impact.  When I cut out soda and other things I was eating each day, it really made a big difference for me.  This was my realization that I wasn’t doing things properly before and that I needed to step up my game a bit.  Cutting out all that nasty processed food is what really made the difference in the end.  That was the missing piece for me.
