Buddy FINALLY learned to sit!

Apparently, you really can teach an old dog new tricks. That is, if you consider 3.5 old for a dog and if you consider “sit” a trick. When we got Buddy, he had everything we wanted in a dog – He was loyal, quiet, sweet, good with our girls and house-trained. He was not trained to do any tricks and has shown zero interest in learning.

What Buddy does love is food. He loves his dog food, my food, dog biscuits and any other food-like item he can get his paws on. We’ve been trying out these Cesar Cookie Crunchies with him to see if we can finally teach him a trick and I think we’ve made progress.

Buddy and Cesar Cookie Crunches

It seems Buddy has finally mastered the art of sitting and he is in love with the Cesar Cookie Crunchies. See that blur? That’s Buddy’s tail wagging like crazy when he sees the treat. They’re pretty small treats (being treats for small dogs), so they’re perfect for training without worrying about over-feeding him.

Buddy’s such a good little man he even let’s the girls get in on the training action without snatching the treats out of their hands. That’s why I love him so much. Those girls get in his face and kiss on him, they lay on him, they play with his fur – and he just lays there and lets them do it. He really is the perfect family dog. I’m so glad we visited that shelter 2 years ago and brought Buddy home. We couldn’t have made a better choice.

For his next trick, I’m going to see if the treats can get him to get his lazy butt off the couch in the morning when it’s time to go outside. I kid you not, this dog will refuse to get out of his warm spot on the sofa and go all day long without going to the bathroom while we’re at work just to avoid moving. It’s part of his charm.

I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of Cesar and received a product sample to facilitate my review and a promotional item to thank me for taking the time to participate.

The “Mommy Wars”

Time Magazine Breastfeeding Cover This image is igniting quite a firestorm in the mommy blogging community. Actually, it’s igniting quite a firestorm everywhere. Once again, the breastfeeding debate is in full swing.

But, this post isn’t about breastfeeding. It’s not even about this cover of Time Magazine.

This post is about the “Mommy Wars” that are running rampant in the parenting world. Mothers attacking each other for their parenting choices and tearing down other women who don’t parent the same way.

I am constantly questioning myself – wondering if I am doing my girls a disservice by not doing this or by doing that. But, I don’t think I’m questioning myself because I really think I’m doing a bad job raising my girls.

I’m questioning myself because I think everyone else is questioning me.

Is it so terrible that another woman makes different parenting choices than you? Is it really necessary to full-on attack someone because they choose to breastfeed their child longer than you think they should? Do you need to belittle another woman because she doesn’t buy all organic food for her children or because she (heaven forbid) allows them to eat chicken nuggets?

For every parenting decision that works for me, there is an opposing decision that works for another family. Who am I to tell that other family that they’re doing it wrong? Who am I to suggest that those parents are doing a poor job raising their children if they’re not physically or emotionally abusing their offspring?

As for this cover of TIME – the picture is not what should offend us. What should offend us is the challenging tone of the question on the cover:

ARE YOU MOM ENOUGH?

This question automatically pits mom against mom and does us all a disservice. Instead of learning from the Attachment Parenting movement, we instantly become defensive and shut down. Nothing is gained, but much is lost.

Moms, it’s time to stop tearing each other down and start building each other up. Educate each other instead of attacking each other. It’s not a war.
