Daughter of the Caribbean

daughter_of_the_CaribbeanAbout the Book

Beloved Jamaica, the island of my birth, where brilliant sunshine and glistening white-sand beaches demand reverence; where the fruit is sweet and abundant; and where the people are strong, defiant and accomplished … Daughter of the Caribbean is a love letter that pays homage to the culture and heritage of this exotic, beautiful and conflicting island paradise that is Jamaica. It is an epic story told through the eyes of a Jamaican native, Olivia, who was raised for years by her Jamaican grandmother Sedith on the sprawling estate of Twickenham, where the fruit trees grew plenty and the adventures were grand. The book explores the bonds of family, the value of embracing and understanding one’s heritage despite notorious ancestors, and the journey that is life. Life’s a battle…and Daughter of the Caribbean explores that battle in the backdrop of tropical paradise and eternal wonder. This book is a must-read for anyone who loves stories of life, love, rich and controversial history and politics, and the bonds among family that can’t be broken.

My Thoughts

Daughter of the Caribbean follows Olivia Jennings on a wild journey of discovery – of herself, of her family and of the country of her ancestors. I learned so much about the history of Jamaica through this book than I have ever heard in the media or history classes. The country has such a rich culture and a tumultuous history that I never even knew existed. As it turns out, Jamaica is more than just reggae music and marijuana. It’s about closeness of family, pride in heritage and a strong sense of self.

Reading about Olivia’s adventures on the grounds of Twickenham (the family estate) left me wishing for tropical fruit and a sea breeze. Later on, we are able to follow Olivia as she faces the challenges of family business back home in Jamaica as well as raising her children as a single parent in the U.S. Nothing in her life has come easy, but throughout the book, I never recall her complaining about the circumstances or whining about how life is unfair. She simply faces the tribulations that are thrown at her with grace, dignity and strength.

I usually end these reviews by telling you what type of person would enjoy this type of book. On this one, I think almost everyone could find a piece of themselves in the story. Check it out and let me know what you think!

My Review

This is Tom Schuyler’s first novel, but he’s off to a great start. I really enjoyed the story of a few people following a trail through history to search for the fortunes of six Jewish businessmen from 1938 and the rightful heirs to said fortune. More than just treasure hunters, the people seeking the fortune actually have a conscience and are after more than just money. There were plenty of twists and turns to keep the story interesting right through to the end.

Mr. Schuyler clearly did his research and I really enjoyed the history lesson that came along with the story. I’ve always been a bit of a history lover and this did not disappoint my inner dork. The details were all there and it added to the story beautifully.

If you enjoy reading fiction (history aside) and a good mystery, this is a great book for you. Give a new author a shot and check out The Rightful Heirs. I highly doubt you will be disappointed.

About the Book

New love and even more questions enter Lizzie Glick’s life in When Strawberries Bloom, the second novel in this series written by an Amish writer and based on true life experiences.

Lizzie’s dream of teaching school has finally come true. She loves the brand-new school building, the sound of the children singing, and the independence she has in the classroom. Even the occasionally unruly boys can’t ruin the excitement she feels each morning when she starts the school day.

But at home things are in turmoil again. What do Dat’s sudden health problems mean for the future of their farm? And what about Lizzie’s future? Emma and Mandy are so certain that Joshua and John are their perfect matches, but Lizzie doesn’t know what to think about Stephen and how he might fit into her life.

What will Lizzie decide? Will she continue to teach school? Or will she give up that dream so that her wish for marriage and a family can come true?

Stephen says he loves her, but Lizzie isn’t sure he really understands her. Can she hope to find anyone within her Amish community who loves her bright mind, her ever-active imagination, her competitive spirit and her stormy humor?

My Review

This is the second book in the Lizzie Searches for Love series. You should definitely start by reading Linda Byler’s first installment, Running Around (And Such). The second book was just as much fun as the first, although I think the series title is a bit misleading. Lizzie is not so much searching for love as she is searching for her own self-identity.

While reading When Strawberries Bloom, I found myself able to relate to Lizzie on many occasions. She has so much trouble understanding why she can’t just have simple aspirations and an easy life like her sisters. I can’t wait for the third installment to find out if Lizzie can finally stop battling her inner self and really find true love.
