5 Friday: Let’s talk about jobs!

I was over at Living Like the Kings this morning and saw this meme that looked like fun. If you want to join in, click the button below and get on it!

Now, I’m pretty sure I’m supposed to come up with my own list of five things of somethingorother, but I like Kat’s list so I’m going to use it as a starting point (or the whole post, whatever).

What’s the funnest(that’s not a word, but I’m going with it) job you had?

I used to work at a gas station in high school and I loved it. It was one of those tiny gas stations right across from the only street light in town (it flashed) and there was only ever one person on duty at a time. That means that I spent every night from 6 to 11 hanging out with my friends at a gas station while ocassionally ringing up customers. I was the fastest ringer-upper (is that a word) in the world and we definitely didn’t have a scanner of any kind. I had to punch in every single purchase and I was awesome at it. I can’t say that I learned a lot while working there (other than only an idiot would put the condom aisle in the only place not seen by the security cameras), but I sure did have fun.

What’s the most boring job you had?

When I was pregnant with Pumpkin, I took a second job to help bring in some extra income. Actually, I got the job before I got pregnant and just happened to be pregnant while I worked there. I was the front desk girl at a hotel from 5 am until 9 am. Basically, I did homework (I was also a college student) and surfed the web from 5 in the morning until around 7 and then did a few check-outs here and there. Since check out wasn’t until 11, I generally didn’t have to do much more than that. I did get to drive the limo once, though.

What’s the most stressful job you had?

I was once a debt collector. Please don’t throw things at me. It wasn’t really my fault. I think it was stressful because I knew where the people I had to call were coming from. I didn’t want to make those calls. Plus, these weren’t even debts they had purposely incurred. I was collecting on behalf of insurance companies that were then turning around and going after the person at fault for a car accident. It just felt wrong a lot of days and that can add a lot of stress.

What’s the most laid back job you had?

My very first job. I got paid under the table to wash dishes and help prep the line in the kitchen of a bar when I was 15. I was the only girl in the kitchen and I was 15. I mean, honestly, what were they going to make me do that was so stressful? I washed dishes and helped get stuff ready for the night’s service. They didn’t let me touch the fire because I wasn’t exactly graceful and it was the same with knives. Basically, I washed bowls and through stuff in the big automatic dishwasher. Oh, and I was the DJ for the kitchen. They yelled out what they wanted to hear and it was my job to find the CD and put it in. The worst part of that job? Breading the catfish. I still get the heeby jeebies just thinking about it. *shudder*

What’s the craziest job you had?

One Christmas season, I got a job at a little kiosk inside the mall that sold these little reusable hand warmers and those spiny things that tickle your head. What? You don’t know what I’m talking about? These things!

Reusable Hand WarmerHead Tickler....duh

So basically, it was my job to walk up to random people in the mall and offer to let them try the Zap Pac or let me tickle their head. Just try to imagine how well that went over with the general public…

“Excuse me, sir? Maybe I tickle your head?”

“Uh, what!?”

“Would you be interested in having your head tickled?”

“I think I better go.”

I didn’t make much money at that job since it was all commission based. I did love those hand-warmers though.

Alright, now you’ve got it. That’s basically every job I’ve ever had, but it’s fun looking back on them and remembering how irresponsible I used to be. What made me decide to take some of these jobs, honestly?
